Launched atop a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, the mission marked Orion’s first journey into space and a major milestone in NASA’s long‑term plans for deep space exploration.

During EFT‑1, Orion orbited Earth twice at an altitude of approximately 3,600 miles (5,800 kilometres), testing critical systems including its heat shield, avionics, parachutes, and separation mechanisms. The successful mission demonstrated Orion’s viability for future human missions to deep‑space destinations, including Mars, and laid the foundation for continued development and testing in the years that followed.
