Description
1946 Penny is Australia's third lowest mintage Penny, and the Key Date Penny in the George VI Series.
In 1946 a major focus for Australian resources was towards World War II efforts, this was a time where silver prices were rising and the transition from .925 to .500 in Threepences through to Florins occurred to ensure the face value of these coins remained above spot value. This undertaking resulted in no Pennies being struck at Melbourne Mint in 1946.
Required in early 1947, at a time when no Penny die hubs had been created dated 1947, the number of 1946 Pennies struck was limited to the number of Penny blanks on hand at the time.
